Let's learn about money in Korea


Korean money, known as the Korean Won (KRW), is the official currency of South Korea. The symbol for the Korean Won is ₩, and it is primarily issued in the form of coins and banknotes.


Banknotes: ₩1,000, ₩5,000, ₩10,000, ₩50,000

Coins:  ₩10, ₩50, ₩100, ₩500


Each denomination has a distinct design and color, featuring important historical figures and cultural landmarks of Korea. The currency is issued and regulated by the Bank of Korea.



✔ ₩1,000 (천 원)

- Color: Light blue.

- Front: Features a portrait of Yi Hwang (이황), a renowned Confucian scholar from the Joseon Dynasty.

- Back: Depicts Dosan Seowon, a Confucian academy built in honor of Yi Hwang.


✔  ₩5,000 (오천 원)

- Color: Reddish-orange.

- Front: Shows Yi I (이이), another prominent Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty and a student of Yi Hwang.

- Back: Displays an image of Ojukheon, the house where Yi I was born, with bamboo trees in the background.


✔  ₩10,000 (만원)

- Color: Green.

- Front: Features King Sejong the Great (세종대왕), one of the most beloved kings in Korean history, known for creating the Korean alphabet (Hangul).

- Back: Shows an image of the Cheomseongdae Observatory and the Korean sundial Angbuilgu.


✔ ₩50,000 (오만 원)

- Color: Yellow.

- Front: Displays Shin Saimdang (신사임당), an accomplished artist, poet, and mother of Yi I.

- Back: Features a muk-eo (ink and fish) painting by Shin Saimdang, along with other traditional Korean artwork.



✔ ₩10 (십 원)

- Material: Bronze.

- Design: Features the image of the Dabotap Pagoda (다보탑) from Bulguksa Temple.


✔ ₩50 (오십 원)

- Material: Nickel and brass alloy.

- Design: Shows an image of a rice stalk, symbolizing Korea's agricultural heritage.


✔ ₩100 (백 원)

- Material: Copper and nickel alloy.

- Design: Displays Admiral Yi Sun-sin (이순신), a national hero known for his naval victories against Japan during the Imjin War.


✔ ₩500 (오백 원)

- Material: Nickel.

- Design: Depicts a crane, representing longevity and grace in Korean culture.


These banknotes and coins reflect the rich history, culture, and values of South Korea, with each denomination telling its own unique story.
